What is a concussion?
A concussion is a serious brain injury caused by a hard blow to the head or body that can cause symptoms – ranging from headache and blurry vision to loss of consciousness – which may interfere with your ability to complete normal daily activities. To make matters worse, after sustaining a concussion, you are susceptible to future concussions – each of which causes further damage to your brain.
Because concussions will not go away on their own, it’s important to receive a prompt evaluation and diagnosis so treatment can begin, as proper treatment is the only way to heal a concussion.
Multidisciplinary concussion care
After any injury where a concussion is suspected, our concussion and head trauma program is where healing happens. Through this program, a team of LVHN health care professionals from multiple medical specialties will assess your health and brain function. Your examination and treatment may involve many team members, including doctors, nurse practitioners, concussion rehabilitation specialists and, if you were injured during a sports activity, athletic trainers.
Together, your care team will work with you to determine the seriousness of your concussion. Then, they will create a concussion treatment plan that is best suited to your unique needs.
Advanced technologies to treat brain injury
We use state-of-the-art technologies, including the computer-based ImPACT® test, to measure the extent of your brain injury. These technologies also help us decide when it’s safe for you to return to your normal activities.
Our credentialed ImPACT consultants work with other members of your care team to evaluate and treat your concussion symptoms.

Our concussion experts will perform a concussion test to determine whether you have a concussion. However, if you suffer a head injury and notice any of the following signs, you may have suffered a concussion:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Blurry vision
- Memory problems
- Headache
- Ringing in the ears
- Fatigue or drowsiness
If you suspect you have a concussion, you should follow proper concussion protocol, which is to:
- Seek a medical evaluation: Schedule an appointment with our experts who specialize in concussion treatment. Our team will assess your symptoms and determine proper concussion treatment and care.
- Rest: Avoid physical activity, and limit screen time and other mentally stimulating activities, such as reading, for the first 48 hours as well as limiting bright lights, loud noises and crowds.
Rest is crucial when it comes to recovering from a concussion, and it is safe to sleep after a concussion, unless otherwise instructed by a doctor. While it’s important to monitor for any worsening concussion symptoms, you do not need to stay awake or wake someone up repeatedly.
