Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) is proud of its distinguished history in graduate surgical education and thanks you for your interest in our RRC-approved Surgical Critical Care Fellowship.

This one-year fellowship emphasizes trauma care. The training takes place at a tertiary care facility, which was designated Pennsylvania’s first Level I Trauma Center in 1981. The program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Upon completion of the training year, you will be eligible to take the board examination for added qualifications in surgical critical care.

By the end of the program, you will have mastered and integrated a systematic approach to patient care, the ability and responsibility required to administrate and manage an intensive care unit, and the general understanding required for comprehensive patient care.

The specific goals of the program are:

To educate the fellow with respect to physiology, metabolism and treatment regimens in the ICU patient

To provide education in the relevant areas of critical care research and a basic understanding of the approach to research issues

To provide the fellow the ability to develop, implement and evaluate diagnostic and treatment programs for patients with critical care problems

To provide the fellow extensive interaction with patients, families and health care delivery personnel

To teach the basic components of ICU administration as well as the practical aspects of managing an ICU and an ICU training program.

Training

Training will occur in the environment of a busy trauma/surgical critical care clinical service. As a surgical critical care Fellow, you will be caring for patients in a 16-bed shock trauma intensive care unit, 12-bed surgical intensive care unit, 14-bed neurosurgical intensive care unit, 18-bed burn unit, as well as step-down and general ward patients.
