Type 1 diabetes is a disorder that results in unusually high levels of glucose (blood sugar). It occurs when cells of the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin. This will elevated glucose levels and may lead to diabetic complications.

Type 2 diabetes is a disorder that can result in high levels of glucose (blood sugar). In addition to the pancreas not being able to make enough insulin, the insulin that is made is not working effectively.

New onset diabetes after transplantation (NODAT) occurs after an organ transplant. The most common cause involves some medications used to prevent organ rejection. Transplantation diabetes can increase the risk of organ rejection and infection.

Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is any of several hereditary forms of diabetes mellitus caused by genetic mutations that disrupt insulin production. The diagnosis of this disorder is confirmed by genetic testing.
