About
Philosophy of care
I am a very holistic physician. The mind, body and spirit are all intertwined and health can be impacted by dysfunction of any individual part. In my experiences, even as an emergency physician, I find it rare that better health is found by testing or prescribing controlled substances.
Why I entered medicine
From my earliest recollection, I wanted to be a physician. In the 1960's it was not a popular career aspiration for women, and I was told by a middle school guidance counselor that I should pick another area of interest - because it was easier for men to "do that kind of work." It probably was that advice that I shouldn't or couldn't be a physician that drove me to success and accomplishment. I was lucky to be accepted into an emergency medicine residency, which was a new specialty at the time and it has been a good fit for me as a career.
Community involvement
I am a local spokesperson for raising awareness for the prevention of cardiac disease. In particular, I regularly participate in programs to help women understand their personal risk. I also serve as medical director for a non-profit called Amigos de Guatemala. This group works to improve the health care of individuals in the remote area of Monte Margerita, Guatemala.
Personal interests
I have four children, and most of my free time is invested in supporting their activities and growth.
