About

Philosophy of care

My philosophy of practice begins at the bedside. Empathetic listening is a skill I learned as a psychiatric nurse. As a nurse practitioner, I believe in empowering patients by listening and learning first. It is essential to first know your patient's concerns, beliefs and worries before imposing treatment or providing care. It is necessary to give the patient knowledge about health, disease and treatment, based on current research, to allow them to make choices regarding their care. We, as practitioners, must accept these choices even if their values do not agree with our own. Empowering patients and establishing a relationship is what guides my practice. Involving patients in their care improves compliance, outcomes and trust in the patient-practitioner relationship.

Why I entered medicine

I chose nursing as my first profession. I became intrigued by nurses and the work they did when I volunteered at a local hospital. Nurses need to coordinate the health care team and care for the patient and family. While I enjoyed the opportunity that bedside nursing provided, I wanted to continue to grow. Working as a nurse practitioner allows me to use the skills that I developed as a bedside nurse, as well as the training I received as a nurse practitioner, to provide quality care for my patients.
