What is a vasectomy?

During a vasectomy, a surgeon uses tiny incisions or heat to disconnect the vas deferens (two tubes that carry sperm to semen). This minor surgery permanently stops sperm from getting to semen, thus preventing conception during sexual intercourse.

While a vasectomy does not stop semen production, the semen will no longer contain sperm.
