Allentown Hospital, now known as Lehigh Valley Hospital–17th Street, is celebrating its 125th anniversary. The hospital played a significant role in the region since opening its doors in 1899. It’s been crucial in caring for community members of all ages, and it’s where many spent their first moments as newborns. In 1901, the first baby was delivered at Allentown Hospital and an expansion in 1912 paved the way for the labor and delivery unit.
The labor and delivery unit remained open until the family birth and newborn center opened at LVH–Cedar Crest in 2000. Many members of the community were born at LVH–17th Street during its first 100 years of operation, including many colleagues who work at LVHN today.
