While pancreatic cancer is not that common, it poses a unique challenge for clinicians. There are no screening tests, and the disease rarely causes symptoms in the early stages. Often, by the time it is diagnosed, it is harder to treat. And the five-year survival rate is only about 12 percent.

The good news is that Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute is proactive in research, clinical trials, partnering with engaged organizations and in caring for patients who have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

“We hope this event will contribute to a greater public understanding of pancreatic cancer, its symptoms and the importance of early detection.” - Maged Khalil, MD

All the segments of this involved community are coming together in a free program, sponsored by the Pancreatic Cancer Hope Foundation, the Fightin’ Foran’s Foundation and the Cancer Institute. They will be joined by Cancer Institute clinicians, pancreatic cancer survivors and caregivers in a free night of education and camaraderie. The event is open to the public.

“Through collaboration, compassion and clinical research, we are making significant strides in advancing treatment for pancreatic cancer, transforming hope into tangible progress,” says Maged Khalil, MD, Associate Director of Research, Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute, and a speaker on Nov. 12. “We hope this event will contribute to a greater public understanding of pancreatic cancer, its symptoms and the importance of early detection. It will also improve access to resources and information that empower patients and families to make informed decisions about care and treatment options.”
