After months of anticipation, Schuylkill County residents got the chance to see inside the newly constructed LVHN Sports Performance Center on the campus of Schuylkill Haven Area School District. School Board members, administrators, educators, coaches and students joined with representatives of Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Schuylkill, Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute, elected officials, contractors and the general community during a special-ribbon cutting ceremony.
Introducing the LVHN Sports Performance Center at Schuylkill Haven Area School District
New facility will provide large physical education and multi-sport practice space for the school district
The 30,000-square-foot sports performance center features a large turf playing surface that can be divided into two “cross-court” sized fields. It will be used for K-12 physical education classes, football, soccer, track and field, cross country, marching band and cheerleading. The main playing area also includes two retractable batting cages available for baseball and softball use. A first-floor weight room is also included. A second story 1/10-mile track features a high-performance surface for running and walking. Two additional sports performance spaces are equipped with competition rubber flooring to host training seminars and exercise classes.
“This is truly a remarkable facility,” said Bill Reppy, President, LVH–Schuylkill. “There is nothing else like this in our region. You can expect LVHN to host programs and events that will introduce this facility to the entire community.”
The facility is available daily for student and staff use. Most areas of the facility will be available for rent during evening and weekend hours for outside organizations. Schuylkill Haven Area School District residents will be able to walk the track free of charge at designated times.
“The Schuylkill Haven Area School District recognizes the value of a complete education, which includes participation in arts and athletics,” said Dr. Shawn Fitzpatrick, Superintendent of Schuylkill Haven Area Schools. “We are proud to partner with LVHN to support our students and community for many years to come.”
School district officials broke ground in April 2021. The ribbon cutting was followed by a community open house where student-representatives and student-athletes offered tours, Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute and rehabilitation teams presented demonstrations, and community organizations shared service information. Teams also practiced during the events.
LVHN provides sports medicine physician coverage, athletic training services, sports performance training, educational scholarships and sports medicine supplies as the exclusive sports medicine provider of Hurricane athletics.
