Leading the Future of Emergency Nursing In Our State-of-the-Art ER

Alex Ozoa is laser-focused on improving experiences in LVHN's Level 1 trauma center for both patients and colleagues

When Alex Ozoa walked into the emergency room (ER) at Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Cedar Crest nearly seven years ago, he knew it was where he belonged. Born and raised in the Lehigh Valley, Ozoa had grown up within the community and was very familiar with Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN). “It was the only ER I applied to,” Ozoa recalls. “I knew this was the place to grow because of the advanced care we provide and the limitless personal and professional opportunities here.”

Today, as a nurse manager in one of Pennsylvania’s most innovative ERs, Ozoa reflects on his journey and the transformative environment of the newly expanded LVH–Cedar Crest ER, inviting others to join a team that’s leading the way in emergency medicine.

Moving from bedside to leadership

Ozoa’s career trajectory highlights LVHN’s commitment to cultivating leaders. Starting as a staff nurse, he quickly discovered the value of mentorship through LVHN’s Nurse Residency Program. “From day one, I had incredible support,” Ozoa says. “Monthly check-ins, connections with leaders across departments and a mentor who was the patient care specialist in the NSICU (Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit) helped me feel welcomed and empowered.”

“Our nurses build a strong sense of community and students gain unmatched hands-on experience during their practicums.” - Alex Ozoa, RN

Initially convinced he would become a nurse practitioner, Ozoa discovered his true calling in leadership. “I wanted to make a tangible difference – not just for patients but for my colleagues and the entire patient care experience,” he says. His perspective shifted from focusing on individual emergency nursing to driving large-scale improvements across his department, a transition he describes as challenging and deeply rewarding.

A new era for emergency care

The expanded LVH–Cedar Crest ER represents the future of emergency medicine. “The design and innovations here are game changing,” Ozoa says. Key improvements include:

  • Increased capacity: An expanded space reduces wait times and ensures timely care.
  • State-of-the-art trauma bays: “Our trauma bay is equipped with a full OR suite and everything else we may need,” Ozoa says.
  • Welcoming environment: The large, bright waiting room and amenities like a bistro and dedicated parking enhance the patient and colleague experience.

The ER’s transformation extends beyond physical upgrades. “The culture here is incredible,” Ozoa says. “Our nurses build a strong sense of community and students gain unmatched hands-on experience during their practicums. Most even join us following school. It’s a collaborative environment where everyone feels supported.”

Leading the way

LVHN is seeking adaptable, open-minded leaders to join this dynamic team. “Success here means being more of a listener than a fixer,” Ozoa advises. “It’s about addressing staff concerns, seeing through their eyes and leading with empathy.”

For Ozoa, the rewards of leadership are immense. “I’m proud to work at LVHN. To contribute to this incredible health network and know my career will continue to grow here, in my community, is something I value deeply.”
