Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Cedar Crest and Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Muhlenberg recently received the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Comprehensive Hypertension Center Certification to recognize their commitment to following proven, research-based treatment guidelines to care for people with complex or difficult-to-treat hypertension, also known as high blood pressure.

A recent AHA report notes an estimated 122.4 million Americans, 20 and older, have high blood pressure and many don’t know they have it, leading to it being known as a silent killer.

The World Health Organization estimates there are 1.28 billion adults age 30–79 years worldwide who have hypertension, with about two-thirds living in low- and middle-income countries.

According to the AHA, certified comprehensive hypertension centers such as LVH–Cedar Crest and LVH–Muhlenberg must be primarily devoted to patients with hypertension and related disorders. In addition, they must be recognized as referral and treatment resources for resistant and secondary hypertension and have facilities and personnel capable of assessing and evaluating complicated hypertension problems.

Certified Comprehensive Hypertension Centers are recognized as leaders in providing the most up-to-date effective treatment strategies based on current evidence-based research in hypertension.

“Early intervention and effective treatment is vital with hypertension. Know your numbers and work with your primary care clinician or cardiologist to keep your blood pressure under control.” - Eric Elgin, MD

The hospitals underwent several reviews by AHA quality improvement specialists who evaluated their policies, procedures and operations to ensure appropriate diagnosis, evaluation and treatment protocols were in place and used for hypertension patients.

Eric Elgin, MD, Network Chief of Cardiology for Lehigh Valley Heart and Vascular Institute, says the designation reflects the expertise across the Heart and Vascular Institute and its commitment to world-class care, research and education. “Early intervention and effective treatment is vital with hypertension. Know your numbers and work with your primary care clinician or cardiologist to keep your blood pressure under control,” Dr. Elgin says.
