Blue skies, sunshine and mild temperatures greeted thousands of people who got their first COVID-19 vaccine shot on Saturday. It was the first COVID-19 mass vaccination clinic for Northampton County, but nothing new for Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN).
Three thousand eager people turned out and rolled up their sleeves to receive the Moderna vaccine at a drive-through clinic on the campus of Northampton Community College (NCC), Bethlehem Township.
“We are excited to expand our mass vaccinations to Northampton County,” says Terry Burger, RN, who serves as Incident Commander. “The people being vaccinated here seem very happy, and those helping us are so enthusiastic and excited it makes for a great day.”
LVHN is vaccinating under Pennsylvania’s Phase 1A and is committed to providing vaccines as efficiently and quickly as possible. All COVID-19 vaccines provided by LVHN are free.
As those getting shots relaxed for a 15-minute post-vaccine period, they offered thanks to LVHN. “It was so smooth,” community member David Stewart says. “We do appreciate this and hope everyone stays safe as possible.”
Other attendees, Beth and her 88-year-old mother Phyllis of Bethlehem, say they are thankful for the drive-through because of the convenience and ease in getting through. “It’s so organized. It was done so well,” Beth says. “Everyone was so nice. LVHN made it easy.”
In addition to the NCC mass vaccination, LVHN has conducted drive-through mass vaccination clinics at Dorney Park and Pocono Raceway. Just last week, LVHN introduced its COVID-19 mobile vaccination fleet unit to reach large concentrations of people eligible for the vaccine but unable to get to hospitals or drive-through clinics. Already, the units have been operational in Carbon, Luzerne and Schuylkill counties and throughout the Lehigh Valley. The fleet of three vehicles was made possible by a partnership with Bennett Toyota, Allentown. Daily vaccine clinics continue to be offered at all LVHN hospitals, as well. Appointments are required.
