Our Shared Calling: Alice Ashman’s Leadership in Pediatrics

She's a hands-on leader who empowers her team to provide the best care at Lehigh Valley Reilly Children's Hospital

At Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), nurses are more than caregivers. They are leaders, mentors and innovators who embody our shared calling. Alice Ashman, RN, a charge nurse on the pediatrics unit at Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital, is the perfect example of this. Through her compassion, leadership and dedication to patient-centered care, Ashman has become a guiding force for both patients and colleagues.

A steady hand in pediatrics

Ashman’s journey in pediatrics is defined by her deep connection with her patients and her team. For many years, she has been a vital part of the pediatrics unit, mentoring nurses and ensuring exceptional care.

“When I think about Alice, I think of kindness, patience and a deep commitment to patient care,” Anna Folk, MSN, RN, Director of Clinical Services at Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital says. “She’s not only a leader but also an incredible resource for our team. Her ability to guide and support others has made a lasting impact on all of us.”

Leadership on the night shift

Ashman’s role as a charge nurse on the night shift comes with immense responsibility. Recently, she managed an astounding 17 patient admissions in a single 12-hour shift, a feat that showcased her extraordinary organizational skills and commitment to teamwork.

“Alice is the kind of leader who steps up when the pressure is on,” Folk says. “That night, despite the challenges, she ensured every patient and colleague was supported. Her ability to keep the team calm and focused is remarkable.”

Beyond managing staffing and bed placement, Ashman is a constant source of support for her colleagues. She models the teamwork and communication she values, fostering a collaborative environment where nurses feel empowered to give their best.

Communication at the heart of care

Clear communication is a cornerstone of Ashman’s leadership style. Heavily involved in the staffing council, she plays a key role in balancing schedules and ensuring the pediatrics unit is properly staffed. She is in close contact with the leadership team, keeping it updated on any staffing needs or changes.

On her shift, Ashman keeps her team connected, often using group messaging to inform everyone about new admissions and patient assignments. Her proactive approach ensures that the unit runs smoothly and that nurses are always prepared for what’s next.

A natural leader and innovator

“Alice is the definition of a hands-on leader,” Folk says. “Her approach to leadership is practical and innovative, and she’s always thinking about how we can improve care for our patients.”

With years of experience and an innate ability to problem-solve, Ashman is a go-to resource on the night shift. Whether it’s adjusting protocols or navigating a particularly busy night, she is always ready to lead.

Compassion and career growth

“I love working on my unit, and I plan to stay here until I retire,” Ashman says with a smile. “LVHN is growing so fast, and there are endless opportunities for nurses. I encourage others to find a role that fits their passion, because there’s always something new to learn.”

Her commitment to lifelong learning and growth is something she shares with every nurse she mentors. Her encouragement and guidance have helped shape the careers of many, including Folk herself.

A nurse who sets the standard

For Anna Folk, Ashman is the embodiment of LVHN’s nursing values: Teamwork and Compassion, Nurse-Led Innovation, Support and Communication and Professional Development.

“Alice doesn’t just manage the unit – she sets the standard for what it means to be an LVHN nurse,” Folk says. “Her dedication to her patients, her team and her role as a leader makes her truly exceptional.”

Ashman’s story reminds us of the profound impact nurses have every day. At LVHN, nurses such as Ashman are empowered to lead, innovate and make a difference, shaping the future of healthcare for the better.
