Our upper arms and shoulders are crucial in so many activities, it’s a real problem when we are in pain in that area. An intricate highway of tendons, muscles and bones, the shoulder is subject to many different conditions that can cause pain. The need for awareness about shoulder and upper arm pain and how it can be treated has prompted Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute and its team of clinicians to schedule two information sessions in the month of October at two convenient Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) sites.
Orthopedic surgeons Rupam Das, MD, and Thomas Jordan, MD, will speak on a range of topics, from various causes of shoulder pain to the advanced techniques – both surgical and nonsurgical – that are available for treatment at the Orthopedic Institute.
One of the most common conditions is the rotator cuff tear, which can happen to the weekend athlete, the weekend DIYer or just about anyone. The clinicians will explain the treatment protocol, which is conservative nonsurgical methods first. If they do not resolve the issue, arthroscopic surgery may be an option.
Arthroscopic surgery is a great alternative compared to the open surgery that was routinely done in the past. The surgery is done through very small incisions so there’s less damage to the surrounding tissues. This puts patients a step ahead when it comes to rehabilitation.
These sessions offer a wealth of information for those who have injured a shoulder or for those who want to know what to expect if they ever do.
