Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Cedar Crest and LVH–Muhlenberg are among 17 hospitals from across the U.S. recognized as Leaders in Caring for People With Diabetes. Hospitals on this list must meet strict standards for delivering safe, high-quality care set by the American Diabetes Association and The Leapfrog Group.
“I’m incredibly proud that two LVHN hospitals are among only 17 others in the country recognized for providing comprehensive, leading-edge care to patients with diabetes,” says Robert McCauley, MD, Chief, Division of Endocrinology, Lehigh Valley Health Network. “This achievement lets our community know exceptional care for diabetes is available close to home.”
Two LVHN Hospitals Among Top 17 in the Nation for Diabetes Care
LVH–Cedar Crest and LVH–Muhlenberg are recognized by The Leapfrog Group and American Diabetes Association as leaders in caring for people living with diabetes
Hospitals that achieve this recognition were assessed on a range of key indicators demonstrating high levels of training and care including:
- Evaluating policies and protocols supporting patient-centered care
- Adherence to evidence-based guidelines in preparing patients for surgery and managing all diabetic patients in the hospital
- Implementation of robust planning for high-risk diabetes patients from the day of admission to discharge and facilitating a seamless transition from hospital to home
“Eight million people living with diabetes are hospitalized each year in the United States, and a disturbing number of them experience safety breakdowns due to preventable medical errors,” says Leah Binder, President and CEO, The Leapfrog Group. “This program is a powerful tool to promote facilities that can appropriately accommodate and safely manage care for these at-risk patients.”
LVH–Cedar Crest and LVH–Muhlenberg provide comprehensive, individualized care and education to people living with diabetes. This includes access to clinicians and educators who can provide support and advice about nutrition, medications and therapies. Because of these resources, patients with diabetes can live happy, healthy lives.
"There is an immense need to ensure hospitals provide safe, patient-centered care for all people who live with diabetes,” says Robert Gabbay, MD, Chief Scientific and Medical Officer, American Diabetes Association. “Hospitals recognized through this program are leading the way."
