Starting a nursing career can be both exciting and challenging. At Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), we are committed to supporting our nurses, particularly during these crucial early stages of learning. To facilitate this important period of growth, we pair newly hired nurses with experienced nurse preceptors who act as mentors, guides and educators. These preceptors play a vital role in helping new nurses integrate into their roles, ensuring they feel supported and confident as they begin their journey with us.
The Vital Role of LVHN Nurse Preceptors
Helping support nurses in their career journey
Preceptors help new nurses deal with the uncertainty of the clinical setting that is inherent to gaining proficiency. Ultimately, both nursing and medicine are taught in an apprenticeship system, and the role of the “guide at the side” is critical to moving from novice to expert.
What is a nurse preceptor?
A nurse preceptor is an experienced nurse who provides guidance and support to newly hired nurses. Integral to our comprehensive orientation program, preceptors at LVHN complete specialized training courses to prepare them for this role, equipping them with the necessary skills to effectively educate and support their mentees.
Value of nurse preceptors
Preceptors are not just mentors; they are advocates for our new nurses, offering encouragement and fostering a sense of belonging. They help new nurses develop their clinical skills, understand the intricacies of patient care and navigate the complexities of hospital procedures and protocols. This mentorship is essential for building confidence and competence in new nurses, which ultimately enhances patient care and safety.
Building long-lasting nursing relationships
One of the most rewarding aspects of the preceptorship program at LVHN is the lasting relationships that are formed. Preceptors often become lifelong friends and professional allies, continuing to offer support long after the formal orientation period has ended.
“Preceptors are known for their deep understanding and empathetic communication,” says Nate Wynosky, MSN, Director of Patient Care Services. “They ensure new nurses not only learn the ‘how’ but also the ‘why’ behind every procedure and medication.”
“One of our preceptors, for example, has been with us for over 20 years and exemplifies the dedication and expertise of our preceptor team,” he continues. “They take the time to get to know each mentee personally, building strong, supportive relationships that last well beyond the orientation period.”
Training and continuous learning
LVHN preceptors are required to take an “essentials” preparatory course before they begin mentoring new nurses. Additionally, they participate in regular check-ins with unit leadership and educators to stay updated on the latest evidence-based practices and techniques. This commitment to ongoing education ensures our preceptors are always equipped to provide the best possible support to new nurses.
