Pediatric Anesthesia and Sedation Services

If your child needs to have a test, procedure or surgery, it can create a lot of anxiety for them – and for you. Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital offers pediatric anesthesia and sedation services to ensure your child can safely undergo treatment with minimal stress.

Pediatric anesthesiologists have four years of anesthesia training followed by a year of child-focused anesthesia care. This extra training gives them the expertise to understand the unique medical and surgical needs of children.

At Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), our pediatric anesthesiologists are certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology to deliver the highest level of safe, effective care for infants to adolescents, including those children who have special needs.

At LVHN, pediatric anesthesiologists offer care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Pediatric anesthesia

To help kids relax before the administration of the anesthetic, we first offer “silly juice” which eases their anxiety as we roll them into the operating room (OR). Once in the OR, pediatric anesthesiologists work closely with pediatric surgeons to ensure children are sleeping safely throughout their procedure.

Our pediatric anesthesiologists are present throughout the operation and continually monitor kids during the procedure to make sure they have no pain. They provide care at:

  • Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital

  • J.B. and Kathleen Reilly Children’s Surgery Center

Pediatric sedation

Sometimes sedating your child is necessary to make it less stressful for them and easier for a pediatric specialist to perform a procedure or get an imaging scan.  Our pediatric anesthesiologists help kids relax and feel sleepy in a variety of outpatient settings, including:

  • Children’s ER

  • Radiology

  • Regional Burn Center

  • Radiation therapy

Pediatric pain management

If your child needs pain control following surgery or a procedure, our pediatric anesthesiologists may use intravenous medications and other anesthetic techniques like:

  • Oral pain-relieving medicines

  • Injections of a local anesthetic to the surgery site

  • Pain-blocking treatments, like nerve blocks, that prevent pain signals between the brain and a specific region of the body

Our goal is to safely relieve your child’s pain before, during and after a procedure or surgery.

Pediatric surgery

LVHN has the area’s only pediatric surgeons. We offer state-of-the-art care for routine to complex surgical conditions.
