Anthony Ryba, a member of the Lehigh Valley Hospital–Hazleton Board of Directors, is a lifelong resident of Luzerne County, Pa. He was employed by the Hazleton Area School District for 28 years, serving as Business Administrator for 18 years before being promoted to Assistant to the Superintendent until his retirement in 2021. In December 2021, he started a four-year term as school director.  

As Assistant to the Superintendent, Mr. Ryba was responsible for the development and supervision of the district’s $180 million budget. He oversaw payroll, accounts receivable, tax levy/collection, accounts payable, investments, debt service, fixed assets and student activity funds. In addition, he managed support services including transportation, food service, information systems, plant operations and student registration/child accounting. Mr. Ryba also oversaw the Career and Technical programs at the Hazleton Area Career Center and served as the liaison between administration and the Hazleton Area School District solicitor.

Mr. Ryba worked closely with the Superintendent of Schools to organize educational needs from all support services. He acted as the liaison for all building improvement projects undertaken by the Hazleton Area School District with the architect, engineer and project managers and secured financing for these projects. He also served as the district’s chief negotiator with five union groups for several years. All union negotiations were handled with mutual respect and true professionalism, and appreciation of the workplace and challenges.

Mr. Ryba earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from The University of Scranton and a Master of Business Administration from Bloomsburg University. He lives in Conyngham, Pa., with his wife, Rose, and has three children, Monique, Natalie and Tony III. “There is a bright future ahead for Luzerne County, and I want to do my part in its achievement,” Mr. Ryba says. “I pledge to work for the families, both young and old, who call Luzerne County home.”
