Nacho Abia, a member of the Lehigh Valley Health Network Board of Trustees and Lehigh Valley Hospital Board of Directors since 2024, is Chief Executive Officer at Grifols, a publicly traded company in the Spanish and the New York Stock Exchange. Grifols is a biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Barcelona, Spain, with more than 24,000 employees and with revenues of more than $7 billion. Grifols is a leader in plasma and hemoderivatives solutions medicine that helps millions of patients suffering from various indications and offers treatments, among others, for immunology, pulmonology, neurology and infectious diseases.
Mr. Abia has spent half of his more than 25 years of leadership experience in medical technology in the United States (where he moved in 2011) and the other half in Europe (where he is originally from), while currently also spending a significant amount of time developing the business in Asia-Pacific region.
In addition to his Grifols responsibilities, Mr. Abia serves on the Board of Directors of the U.S.-Spain Chamber of Commerce and has served on the Board of Directors of Evident Corporation and the Board of Directors of Advamed. Previous to Grifols, Mr. Abia served for more than two decades as the Chief Executive Officer of Olympus Corporation of the Americas, a Japanese medical technology company based in the Lehigh Valley, which is a global leader in early diagnosis and minimally invasive surgical treatments..
Mr. Abia holds dual master’s degrees, one in telecommunications and electronic engineering, and another in business administration.
Originally from Barcelona, Mr. Abia holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and Spain. He is married with two children and lives in Bethlehem, Pa.
In his personal time, he enjoys spending time with his family, playing tennis, hiking, running and cycling. He firmly believes in the motto, “Be persistent. Never give up and fight for what you believe is right.”
