Neil Mathews, MD
Program Director, Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship
Neil Mathews, MD, is currently the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program Director. He joined the faculty in late 2012 after having been in private practice for 14 years in Hatboro and Chalfont, Pa. Originally from Plymouth Meeting, Pa., he received his undergraduate degree in biology and chemistry from Virginia Wesleyan College and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1991. After completing his internship at the Naval Hospital Charleston, S.C., he served as a general medical officer for the Navy aboard the USS Seattle and on shore in New Jersey. After completing his residency at Bryn Mawr Hospital, he completed a sports medicine fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia in 1998. While there, he served as assistant team physician for the Philadelphia Eagles football team. He has remained active in the field of sports since graduation by precepting/teaching at Abington Family Medicine and covering local high school football games. Currently, he sees patients at Valley Health Partners Family Health Center and serves as team physician for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms ice hockey team and for the Phantoms Sled Hockey team for the disabled. He also leads the college medicine experience at Muhlenberg College for our family medicine residents. In his spare time, he enjoys practicing acupuncture, spending time with his three children, working in the garden and watching the Phillies and Eagles.
