Ryan Surmaitis, DO
Medical Director, Acute Care Substance Use Management and Prevention, and Medical Toxicology Rotation Director, Assistant Fellowship Director for LVHN Medical Toxicology Fellowship and Medical Toxicology Rotation Director
Hello future toxicology fellow! I am Ryan Surmaitis, a New Jersey native and childhood Lehigh Valley resident. I am a graduate of the University of Delaware (go Blue Hens!) and attended medical school at Nova Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. I completed my emergency medicine residency at LVHN from 2012-2016. It was during this time that I developed a passion for toxicology and became inspired to pursue a fellowship. I completed a medical toxicology fellowship at Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia. My initial experience at LVHN was such a positive one that I jumped at the opportunity to come back and join full-time as an emergency medicine/toxicology attending physician. My clinical interests include addiction medicine, pharmacogenomics and medical education. I work closely with University of South Florida Health Morsani College of Medicine SELECT (Scholarly Excellence. Leadership Experiences. Collaborative Training.) medical students and lead the toxicology clerkship student/resident rotation. We all know the practice of medicine is stressful, and one of my teaching goals is to alleviate that stress and keep the education process both engaging and lighthearted. Outside of the hospital, I am a homebody and spend time with my wife and three young children. I occasionally can be found at a pool, farmers’ market or playing guitar.
