To help ensure children have a laboratory blood work experience tailored to them, Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital worked with HNL Lab Medicine to establish pediatric patient service centers at several HNL Lab Medicine locations. These pediatric patient service centers are designed just for kids, with pediatric-certified phlebotomists, kid-friendly draw rooms, and educational material tailored to children to provide insight and reduce anxiety surrounding blood work.
Compassionate blood draws for children
While children of all ages are welcome at any HNL Lab Medicine Patient Service Center, the pediatric locations are specially equipped to provide a comfortable and unique experience for your child. Created to reduce the anxiety and burden of lab work for pediatric patients as well as their parents and guardians, our pediatric phlebotomy services feature:
Pediatric-certified phlebotomists
Collecting blood samples from the pediatric population requires a special skill set that takes into account the unique needs of children. Our pediatric phlebotomists are specially trained in both the technical and emotional skills required to provide young patients with the best experience possible, including needle phobia, developmental milestones, anxiety reduction, special needs techniques, collection methods and techniques for a painless draw. Our pediatric-certified phlebotomists also have the training and skills to determine what method of collection is safest for the patient based on age, size, tests ordered and tubes needed for collection.
Child-centered approach
We understand the unique needs of young patients. Our approach is gentle, reassuring and tailored to make the experience as stress-free as possible. We use state-of-the-art, child-sized equipment and the latest techniques to minimize discomfort and ensure the success of each draw.
Kid-friendly environment
In addition to ensuring properly trained staff, the rooms have been specifically designed for pediatric patients with kid-friendly draw rooms that have been designed with children in mind, including a smart TV that displays child-friendly content to help distract a child from the procedure. The rooms also feature children’s artwork as décor. At the end of each visit, children will take home a small prize for completing their lab work.
