If your aortic valve isn't working properly, meaning it doesn't open or close correctly, TAVR may be an option to replace your valve. Instead of surgical aortic valve replacement, which requires open heart surgery, TAVR is a minimally invasive alternative where we replace your valve through a catheter with a new valve typically made of cow or pig tissue.
At Lehigh Valley Heart and Vascular Institute, we perform a large number of TAVR procedures every year. That’s experience and expertise you can trust. We’ve performed nearly 1,300 TAVR procedures since the procedure was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2011.
Not everyone who needs a diseased valve replaced is a candidate for TAVR. Your doctor will partner with you to make a decision on the best approach.
If you qualify for TAVR, we offer a variety of replacement valve sizes, allowing us to get the right valves to more people.
To treat severe aortic stenosis using TAVR, your doctor places an expandable valve into your heart via a catheter (tiny, hollow tube). The catheter is inserted into an artery through your groin to replace the diseased aortic valve.
At LVHN, TAVR is a more common procedure for severe aortic stenosis than surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR), which requires an incision in your chest to access the heart to replace the valve. Less invasive procedures like TAVR commonly result in a faster recovery time, with less pain.
