Get to know Margaret Vido, DO, emergency medicine resident.

Career goal: I am still deciding. In addition to emergency medicine, I am interested in learning more about sports medicine and wilderness medicine.

What makes your LVHN training program different from others across the country? 

I think our program provides really strong critical care education. We spend a significant amount of time in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Muhlenberg, which gives us the opportunity to manage critical patients on the floor. This training strengthens our care of critical patients in the emergency room (ER). Additionally, we have the opportunity to work in both a community hospital setting and at a larger teaching hospital, Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest. Each of these settings provides unique learning experiences and challenges, which are both important to becoming a well-rounded ER physician.

What has been the most unique part of your training experience so far? 

LVHN provides an incredibly supportive environment for learning. We have attending physicians and senior residents who take the time to teach on every shift, and the entire residency program is supportive and eager to help whenever possible.

What is one memory you have from your training so far that will stick with you for your career? 

Looking back on the first year, I don't think there is one specific memory that stands out. The year goes by so fast, and when I take the time to look back to day one, it is amazing how much I have learned and experienced (and how much I still have to learn).  

If I had to pick something I will never forget, it would be working during the uncertain times during the COVID-19 crisis. While so many things have become more challenging during this time, we’ve also seen the strength of the emergency medicine residency program. It made me realize what a great team we have in our residency as everyone was willing to step up and fill in when needed.

What is one piece of advice you would share with someone as they select a training program? 

It’s important to train in a program that supports and challenges you.

What does it mean to be a resident at LVHN?  

Training at LVHN means being part of a team that works together to learn and become better every day to provide our patients the best care possible.
