“What sets this program apart is its unique combination of being a community hospital with academic-level opportunities.”

What makes your Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) training program different from others across the country?

LVHN is an exceptional place to train as a resident. The faculty is not only knowledgeable and kind but also fully dedicated to the growth and well-being of its residents. The working environment is outstanding, fostering a familial atmosphere with mutual respect among co-residents, faculty and ancillary staff. What sets this program apart is its unique combination of being a community hospital with academic-level opportunities. The health network’s extensive catchment area provides exposure to a diverse range of pathologies and patient populations. Additionally, the program offers subspecialty rotations and fellowships in nearly all areas of medicine, enabling residents to explore and gain deeper insights into the many branches of internal medicine.

What has been the most extraordinary part of your training experience so far?

The camaraderie and supportive work environment fostered by the program stands out as one of its unique and most-endearing aspects. The program is highly resident-driven, which means we are quickly immersed in the role of a primary clinician, whether in the intensive care unit or the continuity clinic. While this level of responsibility can initially feel intimidating, the support from senior co-residents and faculty mentors has been an amazing asset, creating an exceptional learning environment. Having worked at several institutions before starting residency, I can confidently say that this program’s balance of independence and support is truly distinctive. It empowers trainees to develop a strong sense of independence and confidence while also ensuring that a dedicated team is always there to back you up and prioritize your growth and well-being.

What is one memory you have from your training so far that will stick with you for your career?

Like many residents, my first rapid response during a night shift is a memory that will stay with me forever. It was an incredibly challenging experience, both clinically and mentally, but what stands out most is the unwavering support I received from my senior resident and the nursing staff throughout the ordeal. I was given the autonomy to make decisions and act independently in the best interest of my patient, all while knowing that I had a reliable team backing me every step of the way. Thankfully, the case had a positive outcome, but the experience left a profound impression on me. It taught me invaluable lessons and, ultimately, helped me grow into a more confident and capable clinician.

What is one piece of advice you would share with someone as they select a training program?

I always advise medical students to start by making a list of their career goals and what they hope to achieve during their training. As you apply and interview with programs, use this list as a guide to determine whether each institution provides the tools and opportunities necessary to turn those goals into reality. Additionally, prioritize programs that make you feel welcome and emphasize integrating you as a valued team member from day one. Residency is a long and challenging journey, but having a supportive group of people who encourage your growth, especially during tough moments, can make all the difference.

What does it mean to be a resident at LVHN?

Being an LVHN resident means being part of a strong and dedicated community that prioritizes patient well-being while fostering an environment of curiosity, rigorous medical education and personal growth. I am incredibly grateful to be part of this team and look forward to welcoming the next group of incoming colleagues.
