“If given the chance to start over, I would still choose LVHN. This place feels like home to me.”
What makes your Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) training program different from others across the country?
My journey starting as an emergency department resident to becoming a toxicology fellow has been filled with twists, turns, decisions and challenges – but not a single regret. The toxicology division at LVHN has distinguished itself for excellence in academic achievement, medical education, research opportunities and patient care. Every toxicology faculty mentor is a top expert in their field. The culture of collegiality fosters a perfect environment to learn, grow and excel. The clinical faculty and network leadership provide tremendous support to enhance my development as a physician. On the last day of my toxicology fellowship at LVHN, I know I will be a highly trained, highly skilled, confident and compassionate medical toxicologist.
What is one piece of advice you would share with someone as they select a training program?
The typical search for a residency or fellowship usually involves a lot of number crunching and comparisons to other programs all mixed with a fair amount of apprehension. How many patients will I be exposed to clinically? Can I do research? Is this an academic environment? How is this program ranked in terms of excellence compared to other programs? Every statistic, metric, rating and ranking is evaluated – and it may still not “feel” like a match because the most important ingredients of a program cannot be found in the numbers. To make a final decision, ask yourself three important questions about the program you covet: Are you committed to excellence? Can I trust you? Do you genuinely care about me – as a person? If the answer to all three of these questions is “yes,” then you have found your home. When I answered yes to all three of these questions, I knew I found my home at LVHN.
What is one memory you have from your training so far that will stick with you for your career?
Imagine eight years of intensive medical training, then try to ponder a single memorable moment. It is an impossible task. There are a total of 14 individuals in my residency class. They are all talented, intelligent, disciplined and kind. I respect and admire each one of them. I cherished the opportunity to learn and work alongside them. One of my most memorable moments as a physician was when a family member received treatment in the emergency department. Witnessing the unparalleled compassion and care displayed by every physician, resident, nurse, tech and clinical staff member was truly remarkable. The positive outcome was made possible by their dedication, for which I am immensely grateful. This profound experience occurred here at LVHN and could not have happened anywhere else.
