Summary
Assists in a variety of highly skilled diagnostic procedures associated with the eyes. Initiates and documents the patient's chief complaint, relevant medical history, and pertinent ocular findings. Performs testing and assists the provider with procedures, injections, and treatments. Educates patients regarding the administration of medications, pre and post-operative instructions.
Job Duties
- Performs preliminary ophthalmic work such as obtaining pressures, checking visual acuities, and completing a slit lamp exam.
- Performs automated and manual testing such as auto and manual refractions, auto keratometry, corneal topography, pachymetry, tonometry, and confrontation visual fields.
- Administers topical eye drops and ointments upon written physician order or written protocol.
- Transcribes results of patient exams on medical record as physician orally dictates during the patient exam.
- Assists with minor surgery procedures, intraocular injections, and laser treatments in exam/treatment rooms including prepping patients for sterile procedures.
- Reviews patients charts prior to physician exam to anticipate procedures and supplies or equipment that may be needed.
- Maintains equipment inventory and sterilizes surgical instruments; and maintains exam/treatment rooms.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma/GED
- 1 year experience as an ophthalmology assistant or
- 1 year experience as a medical assistant.
- Familiarity with the meaning and use of medical terminology and abbreviations.
- Good computer skills using a medical management application.
- Knowledge of anatomy of the eye, ocular conditions, and ocular imaging equipment.
- Knowledge of patient rights and laws relative to those rights, such as HIPAA.
- COA - Certified Ophthalmic Assistant - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire

- Technical School Diploma Medical assistant
Physical Demands
Lift and carry 25 lbs. frequent sitting/standing, frequent keyboard use, *patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
