SummaryPerforms a variety of patient services such as: Phlebotomy, EKG (as site location requires), DNA collections (as site location requires), and specimen collections on a routine and STAT basis. Performs a wide variety of test ordering and clerical duties as required. Performs specimen processing to include: - accessioning of orders, processing of clinical specimens in preparation for departing to HNL processing facility. Projects a positive image of LVHN, with a focus on patient care and customer relations.
Job Duties
- May performs venipunctures, capillary, POCT, EKG, PKU, DUI, Drug Screen and DNA collections, for all age groups, as required by site location.
- Positively identifies each patient prior to collection of specimens, using defined laboratory protocol. Accurately labels all specimens collected for testing. Processes, prepares and stores all specimens for transport, in accordance with laboratory handbook and departmental SOP requirement.
- Clarifies orders and pre-analytical test requirements when required. Reviews tests already requisitioned for accuracy, prior to processing and releasing for transport, while logging courier calls and contacts courier for specimen pick ups, as needed.
- Ability to handle a heavy workload, while potentially working alone or extended hours, as necessary, and having the ability to multitask, prioritize and keep organized.
- Performs LIS data entry and HIS data entry for all blood and body fluids. Obtains blood and body fluid specimens from hospital, outpatient drawing areas and emergency rooms, according to written policies. Utilizes all appropriate programs, systems, applications and assigned laboratory equipment.
- Responds to customer and client inquires/questions for information regarding specimen requirements, testing schedules, hospital and departmental operations.
Minimum Qualifications- High School Diploma/GED
- Proficient computer skills required. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
- Knowledge of best practices and regulation of blood drawing techniques and collection.
- Course work or previous medical terminology experience.
- Good interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients and providers.
- Ability to build comprehensive reports and effectively convey information to others.
- Knowledge of safety guidelines, utilization of proper PPE and sanitization processes.
- Must successfully complete appropriate training and achieve proficiency at the end of 90 days.
Preferred Qualifications- Technical School Diploma Successful completion of an approved phlebotomy training course or 1-year previous work experience as a phlebotomist.
- 1 year experience as a phlebotomist.
- CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification - State of Pennsylvania or
- PBT - Phlebotomy Laboratory Technician ASCP - State of Pennsylvania
Physical DemandsLift and carry 40-50 lbs. Examples: Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient's weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift. *Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
