SummaryThe standardized patient is an individual who is trained to portray a patient in a realistic way in a simulated environment. The standardized patient performs a variety of roles including, but not limited to a patient, family member, or member of the healthcare team to assist in education and assessment of learners. The standardized patient is trained and expected to portray all aspects of the role as outlined in the assigned case.
Job Duties
- Portrays all aspects of the case in a standardized manner, as elicited by students during simulated patient history
taking and/or medical examinations.
- Undergoes basic physical examination in simulated encounters with learners.
- Memorizes a case script detailing chief complaint, symptoms, specific emotions, and behaviors for presentation
in teaching and/or assessment of activities.
- Remains in a specific patient character as trained when responding to student questions.
- Accurately remembers encounters with students for the purpose of providing verbal and/or written feedback.
- Provides educationally constructive verbal feedback within a structured format, as appropriate to the position.
- Maintains confidentiality of information related to cases, student behaviors and feedback evaluations.
- Demonstrate improvisational skills when appropriate in case portrayals.
- Participates in-group trainings.
- Undergoes sensitive physical examinations in simulated encounters with learners, on as needed basis only.
Minimum QualificationsPreferred Qualifications- Acting training or acting experience
Physical DemandsLift and carry 25 lbs. frequent sitting/standing, frequent keyboard use, *patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
