Cars, Cancer Screenings and Brandon Graham Cruise the Lehigh Valley Auto Show

LVHN supports free prostate cancer screenings for show attendees

The Opens in new tab Lehigh Valley Auto Show is a family-friendly event featuring something for everyone, even screening tests for men concerned about prostate cancer. In the span of three days at the show, an impressive 300 men were screened.

Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) supported the effort to provided free prostate cancer screenings at this year’s show. The prostate cancer screening is a quick and simple blood test that measures for levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Anyone with elevated PSA levels will be contacted after the show and encouraged to seek follow-up care.

Did you know?

This year in the U.S. it’s expected that more than 300,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed. It’s the second-most-common cancer among men, after lung cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.

LVHN supported Opens in new tab HNL Lab Medicine, Opens in new tab Man Cave Health and the Opens in new tab Prostate Cancer Foundation, who partnered to conduct the tests. Representatives were also present from Opens in new tab Pocono Raceway to promote further testing occurring at the NASCAR race weekend in June. LVHN will also be there to support that event.

Special guests Brandon Graham and Nick Dawkins joined LVHN at the booth to meet attendees and bring awareness to the importance of early screening. Graham, a well-known defensive end with the Philadelphia Eagles for 15 years, just retired this month. Dawkins plays center for Penn State University football and is an LVHN Impact Athlete. He also played for Parkland High School.

“We were excited to participate in the Lehigh Valley Auto Show with like-minded organizations and bring these amazing athletes to meet attendees,” says Chris Masters, Executive Director, Man Cave Health. “We like to meet men where they are and encourage proactive health care decisions. This collaboration created more opportunities for men to access screenings and engage in open conversations in a comfortable setting.”

While it’s probably not what they were expecting to do at the auto show, the men who chose to be screened took an important step for their health. Early detection leads to the potential for more treatment options and hopefully a cure. Prostate cancer risk factors include age, ethnicity and family history.
