Hospice is an area you may not be thinking about until you need it. Here are some of the most common questions about hospice and palliative care:
Who is eligible for hospice?
Someone is eligible for hospice services if:
- They receive a terminal diagnosis for conditions including (but not limited to) cancer, endstage cardiac disease, ALS, HIV, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
- Life expectancy is six months or less, as determined by a care provider.
- They choose to focus on making themselves comfortable, rather than seeking additional treatment for their condition.
Where can hospice patients receive care?
HOME HOSPICE CARE: The most common type of hospice care. Our team of experienced hospice nurses, hospice aides, social workers, chaplains, therapists and volunteers work in partnership with you, your family and your physician to develop an individualized plan of care in the patient’s home.
INPATIENT CARE: For when symptoms cannot be managed without extensive intervention. The recently reopened Monroe County Hospice House, located at 412 E. Brown St. in East Stroudsburg, is the only location for inpatient hospice care in Monroe County. With six inpatient rooms (including private bathrooms) and a view of a peaceful garden patio, this unique facility looks and feels more like a home than a medical building.
Is hospice care covered by Medicare and/or private insurance?
Hospice care is covered by most insurances, as well as Medicare.
Who is part of the Lehigh Valley Hospital–Pocono hospice care team?
Members of this comprehensive local team who specialize in hospice care include fellow community members providing expertise and support in a variety of areas, including home health, nursing, spiritual guidance and social services. This comprehensive network of individuals helps ensure patients receive the helping hand they need through all the stages of end-of-life care.
