We aim to keep your visit to LVHN Gastroenterology as simple as possible. At the same time, we want to provide a thorough and insightful evaluation of your symptoms or condition.

Types of gastroenterology tests

We use a number of tests that can be conducted in the office so you can get back to your day with minimal interruption.

Anorectal manometry is a test of the muscles around the anal opening, as well as the reflexes and sensation or feeling inside the rectum. Patients with constipation or stool leakage may have this test.

A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a procedure used to examine the inside of the rectum and a portion of the colon. This is done by inserting a flexible tube containing a video camera through the anus, which is then advanced into the rectum and the colon.

Esophageal manometry is a test to measure the action of the lower esophageal sphincter and esophageal body. A catheter is used to measure esophageal pressure and records the duration and sequence of contractions in the esophagus. This test is commonly given to people who have difficulty swallowing, pain when swallowing, heartburn or chest pain.

During the test, a thin catheter is passed through your nose and into your stomach, and then the tube is pulled slowly back into the esophagus. Pressure measurements may be taken at intervals along the catheter. The outer end of the catheter is attached to an instrument called a transducer that will record the pressure.

The transducer records the high-pressure zone of the lower esophageal sphincter, the sphincter muscle that acts as a valve to prevent reflux of gastric acid into the esophagus. When the catheter is in the esophagus, you will be asked to swallow. The swallowing wave will be recorded.

Liver elastography is a noninvasive test your clinician can use to learn about your liver’s health. FibroScan, a type of liver elastography, is a special ultrasound technology that measures liver stiffness (hardness) and fatty changes in your liver. These measurements help your clinician learn more about your liver disease. Learn more about FibroScan results.

A hydrogen breath test is used to diagnose small intestine bacterial overgrowth and carbohydrate malabsorption, such as of lactose and fructose. The noninvasive test is performed after a short period of fasting with dietary restrictions. The test may last up to three hours with samples taken every 30 to 60 minutes in our office.

The breath samples are analyzed and then placed on a graph and interpreted by your clinician. He or she will give direction based on the results of your breath test.

If this test is ordered for you, you will be given complete information including how to prepare and what to expect during the test.
