Your immune system protects you against disease by clearing harmful cells from the body. For reasons researchers are still exploring, the immune system does not recognize cancer cells.
Immunotherapy is changing that by “training” the body to detect cancer cells and clear them from the body. Treatments are given as an intravenous (IV) infusion. We offer immunotherapy for many types of cancer including brain tumors, kidney, skin, and lung cancers.
Immunotherapy at Lehigh Valley Cancer Institute
The Cancer Institute is a national leader in immunotherapy. Our efforts, along with other cancer research centers, are extending lives – even for difficult cases.
Our membership in the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Alliance (MSK Cancer Alliance) expands our capabilities. We tap into the expertise of researchers who are at the forefront of immunotherapy, allowing you to receive world-class care. Find out more about our membership in the MSK Cancer Alliance.
Ongoing immunotherapy research at Lehigh Valley Cancer Institute
We are exploring ways to use immunotherapy for treating different types of cancer through research and clinical trials. These efforts give you access to care options that are typically only available in large cities. Find out more about cancer research and clinical trials.
Highlights of our immunotherapy research include:
Dual treatment with radiation therapy and immunotherapy
Radiation therapy, used in combination with immunotherapy, can help to destroy cancer cells more effectively. This combination approach is showing promise for rare forms of lung cancer and kidney cancer.
How immunotherapy can help you
Immunotherapy may be right for you if cancer:
- Comes back after completing standard treatments, such as surgery or radiation therapy
- Spreads to other parts of the body
- Is far enough along that standard treatments are not likely to work
We use immunotherapy to treat many types of cancer, including:
