  2. Women’s Heart Program

The Women's Heart Program is home to the largest group of female cardiologists in the region. We prevent, treat and manage heart conditions during all ages and stages of a woman’s life. We provide dedicated heart services for congenital issues, as well as heart challenges that arise during pregnancy or as a result of cancer treatments.

Women’s heart health at Lehigh Valley Heart and Vascular Institute

At the Women's Heart Program, we help protect your heart during:

Pregnancy: We partner with your OB-GYN and colleagues at our maternal-fetal medicine practice to monitor your heart health if you have high blood pressure (preeclampsia), a heart rhythm disorder, congenital heart disease or any other heart condition that may impact your health during pregnancy or delivery.

Menopause: If you use hormone replacement therapy to ease menopause symptoms, we work with your gynecologist to minimize your risk of hormone-induced heart problems.

Cancer treatments: Chemotherapy and radiation can damage your heart. Specialists in our Cardio-Oncology Program collaborate during and after cancer treatments to monitor your heart health.

Women’s heart treatments

Help for heart rhythm problems: We use advanced ablation procedures and devices like pacemakers to treat heart rhythm disorders, or arrhythmia. Learn more about our Comprehensive Heart Rhythm Management Program.

Heart failure management: Devices, such as ventricular assist devices (VAD), pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD), help your heart pump blood if you’re experiencing heart failure. Learn more about the Mechanical Circulatory Support Program.

Heart valve treatments: In our Structural Heart Disease Program, we offer minimally invasive procedures to repair or replace diseased heart valves. We offer transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and MitraClip®, a device to treat mitral valve regurgitation.

Specialized care for peripheral artery disease (PAD): This circulation disorder affects blood flow to the arms, legs and organs. Women’s PAD symptoms can be different from men’s. Our specialists identify women at risk for PAD and develop targeted care plans to lower risk or treat symptoms. Learn more about peripheral artery disease.

Cholesterol management: High cholesterol puts you at risk for heart disease. We offer education and treatment programs to help you make changes to keep your levels in a healthy range.

Teri Hontz

SCAD heart attack survivor

Teri Hontz of Whitehall had just hit the dance floor at a wedding in 2015 when she was overcome by excruciating jaw pain. She quickly sat down, but continued feeling lightheaded and clammy. Her husband wanted to call 911, but she insisted it would pass.
