Career goal: To serve as a competent, safe and compassionate surgeon to the patients in my community
I’m proud to be a part of this unique program and service the Lehigh Valley community.
What makes your Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) training program different from others across the country?
The LVHN General Surgery Residency Program is unique in its ability to provide specialized care to a wide community in the eastern and northeastern Pennsylvania area while continuing to be a center of educational excellence. Because of its large volume, LVHN provides great surgical training in both routine and specialized cases. This allows trainees to pursue all career avenues, be it community general surgery or even specializations such as surgical oncology, pediatric surgery and beyond.
What has been the most extraordinary part of your training experience so far?
The greatest experience in my training has been the collegial working environment fostered at LVHN. Whether it be residents, attendings, nursing staff or case managers, we all work together to provide the best care for our patients.
What is one memory you have from your training so far that will stick with you for your career?
Although I’ve already made innumerable memories in residency, nothing stands out more than the smiles and gratitude of patients who I’ve had the fortune to care for. While the daily challenges of residency can make it hard to appreciate the critical role we play in our patients’ lives, it’s seeing them leave the hospital after a prolonged course or comforting a distraught family member that truly leaves a mark.
What is one piece of advice you would share with someone as they select a training program?
Be true to yourself, and what you’re looking for. There are hundreds of programs across the country, but it’s important to find the one that best fits your needs. Search for a place and co-residents that make you excited to come to work and will create an environment where you can do your best work.
What does it mean to be a resident at LVHN?
Being a surgical resident at LVHN means being an active advocate for your patients and their care. We are striving to advance patient outcomes, make strides in research and of course become better surgeons. I’m proud to be a part of this unique program and service the Lehigh Valley community.
