La Lehigh Valley Health Network se enorgullece en ser ahora parte de Jefferson Health.
My name is Dennis Ologunro, MD, and I’m a PGY-1 psychiatry resident here at Lehigh Valley Health Network. I’m currently rotating on the adult psychiatric inpatient unit. I wake up at 6 a.m. to arrive around 7 a.m., and, depending on how I feel, I get breakfast at the cafeteria or immediately head up to the resident lounge. I read up on my patients, who are a mix of new ones and follow-ups, noting things like overnight events or tasks that need to be done. When I’m ready, I head down to the inpatient unit and see my patients. Afterward, I’ll round with the attending and attend collaborative rounds. Collaborative rounds are great because each member of the treatment team is present to give updates on cases. Rounds with the attendings are great opportunities for learning as each one encourages us to ask questions, each with their own style, and will give educational points relevant to our cases.
Around noon, I’ll grab lunch and my afternoon caffeine fix at the cafeteria, often with my co-residents, catching up with everyone. Then, I head back upstairs to work on notes and/or make phone calls to collateral if more information about our patients is needed or to give updates to family members. Depending on the schedule, in the afternoon we might also lead a psychoeducation group on the unit. This allows patients to ask questions about their diagnosis and the medications that they are given. It’s a great opportunity to give residents more exposure to other patients that they might not be seeing. We have didactics on Wednesday afternoons from noon to 4:30, where we get a mix of lectures, group supervision and board review.
The rest of the afternoon is mainly spent catching up on notes and tying any loose ends. Usually, the workday is done by 5 p.m. Afterward, I’ll either hit the gym at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Muhlenberg or the one near my apartment. When done, I’ll go home and either prepare dinner or eat whatever I picked up around town if I’m feeling lazy. When I’m off, I like to explore different restaurants, hang out with my co-residents, catch up with family and friends out of state, and/or attend any local events.
