If you or a loved one has a neurological condition – or you’re experiencing unexplained symptoms – you may feel anxious and overwhelmed. At Lehigh Valley Fleming Neuroscience Institute, our team understands. We work with you to get you a prompt diagnosis and the right treatment for your needs.
Our team of board-certified neurologists have years of experience diagnosing and treating patients with neurological conditions. Many of our neurologists have fellowship training in neurological specialties, giving them a high level of skill and knowledge in the field.
What is neurology?
Neurology is the medical field that deals with all conditions and diseases of the nervous system, which includes:
- Central nervous system: Brain and spinal cord
- Peripheral nervous system: The nerves that are outside of the brain and spinal cord, throughout the body
A neurologist has specialized education, training and experience in caring for people with neurological disorders, including epilepsy, stroke, headache disorders, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, spinal disorders, disorders of the peripheral nervous system (such as peripheral neuropathy) and neuromuscular disorders. Should you need treatment for brain tumor, our neurosurgeons and neuro-oncologist are skilled in brain tumor care.
Neurological symptoms: When to see a neurologist
If you have symptoms that could indicate a neurological condition, it’s important to get the right diagnosis. The neurology team at the Neuroscience Institute specializes in care for people with neurological disorders.
Some of the symptoms that may warrant a visit to a neurologist include:
- Frequent, new or worsening headaches
- Dizziness
- Memory problems
- Tremors
- Muscle weakness
- Walking difficulties
- Numbness or tingling
- Double vision
Why choose us to care for neurological disorders?
When you come to the Neuroscience Institute for care, you will find:
- Large practice: Our neurology team includes more than 25 neurologists and more than 20 physician assistants and nurse practitioners. We provide comprehensive services and support for every aspect of your care, from diagnosis through treatment.
- Specialists in every condition: Our team includes neurologists who specialize in different conditions, giving them a high level of expertise. Many of our team members have fellowship training or advanced certifications in caring for patients with specific neurological conditions.
- Dedicated centers of care: You can find expert, focused care for epilepsy, headache, multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease) at our centers devoted to these conditions. We are a designated Center for Comprehensive MS Care, a Level III Epilepsy Center which includes an epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) and a recognized ALS center by the ALS Association. The teams in these centers have specific training and experience providing the highest level of care for these complex conditions.
- Excellent diagnosis for neurological disorders: Neurological conditions can often be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms resemble those of other medical conditions. Your doctor may refer you to our team if you are experiencing unexplained symptoms such as headaches or muscle weakness. Our team performs the full range of diagnostic testing, including single-fiber electromyography (EMG). This test, which is not widely available, is especially valuable for diagnosing neuromuscular disorders. We combine the latest diagnostic technology with our years of experience to give you a diagnosis.
- Customized treatment plan: Treating neurological symptoms often involves a combination of different therapies and ongoing monitoring to ensure you are responding well to treatment. We provide comprehensive, thorough care for all of our patients.
- Academic medical center: We are at the forefront of research for neurological conditions. We participate in and lead many clinical trials, especially for multiple sclerosis, dementia and stroke. The goal of clinical trials is to translate the latest research into improved patient care.
- Relationships for life: Many people with neurological conditions need care over their lifetime. We develop close relationships with our patients, getting to know each patient personally, including preferences, lifestyle and health goals. Meet our care team.
- Emphasis on education: We provide educational events throughout the year for patients and for the medical community. Some of our efforts include:
- Events about Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis
- Educational events about stroke for the EMS community
- Conferences for doctors and other medical professionals
- Support group called Brain Warriors for people who have experienced a stroke
Find classes, events and support groups on our Events, Classes and Groups calendar.
When you turn to the Neuroscience Institute for inpatient care, you will find:
