We know that asking questions and understanding the answers are important parts of feeling comfortable about visiting the doctor’s office or being in the hospital. For this reason, and to comply with the law under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) offers interpreter services for more than 200 languages. It’s a free service and includes trained Spanish and Arabic interpreters on-site.

If English is not your language, how can you know whether your doctors and clinicians understand you? This question often causes anxiety when seeking medical treatment. At LVHN, you can relax. We will help you communicate through skilled medical interpreters.* They will speak with you in your language during all phases of patient care – so you’ll feel right at home.

Communication builds trust

Beyond obeying the civil rights laws passed in 1964, making sure that patients and clinicians understand each other improves health care. Good communication helps ensure accuracy and reduce errors. It also builds trust and decreases anxiety about exams and treatments. LVHN’s interpreter services are available in-person and for telephone and video appointments, whether you’re an inpatient or outpatient.

Why not rely on family?

This is one instance where family is not the best option. Your family members may want to spare your feelings by not spelling out important details. In addition, LVHN interpreters are specially trained and can explain the medical terms used by your clinician. If you choose not to use an LVHN interpreter, you’ll be asked to sign a Patient’s Interpreter Refusal Form.

Become an interpreter

LVHN offers Bridging the Gap for bilingual individuals who want to work as medical interpreters. The 40-hour program covers the skills required for successful interpreting in the medical field. Ours is the leading medical interpreter certificate program in the country and is accepted by both the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters and The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters.

*LVHN interpreters are individuals who received the appropriate training and possess the experience to interpret with skill and accuracy while adhering to the National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice published by the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care.
