Addiction Medicine Fellowship Curriculum

Overview

Our fellowship offers strong experiences across inpatient, outpatient and community-based settings, preparing graduates to manage advanced disease with confidence. Through partnerships with Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN)’s strong specialty departments, fellows will gain the experience to manage substance use disorders and its comorbidities across the lifespan.

Inpatient Rotations

The inpatient drug and alcohol curriculum provides four months of training across American Society of Addiction Medicine level of care settings both through LVHN as well as with our partnership with Treatment Trends, Inc. The inpatient experiences are organized as follows:

  • Eight weeks of inpatient drug and alcohol/medical toxicology consult service
  • Four weeks of Treatment Trends, Inc. residential program
  • Four weeks of Treatment Trends, Inc. halfway home experience

Outpatient and Community-Based Rotations

The outpatient drug and alcohol and community-based curriculum is designed to advance the fellow’s skills in the ambulatory and community-based care for individuals and communities experiencing substance use and substance use disorders. Fellows engage with specialists across the health system to gain a deeper understanding of the health care team and refine skills in primary management of continuity patients remaining engaged with their panel within their designated practice site.

  • Four weeks on Treatment Trends, Inc., outpatient
  • Four weeks on Treatment Trends, Inc., center
  • Four weeks of behavioral health
  • Two weeks of community health
  • Two weeks of connections program
  • Two weeks of pain management
  • Two weeks of physical medicine and rehabilitation
  • 12 weeks of elective

Block Curriculum

Although clinical training remains the central focus of fellowship, didactic time can supplement learning to explore broader concepts that can be applied clinically. The block curriculum is established to emphasize key competencies and knowledge sets. Wellness activities and self-care are integrated into the block curriculum.

Didactics are organized and inclusive of the following opportunities:

  • Learning labs
  • Grand rounds
  • Project ECHO sessions
  • Motivational interviewing sessions
  • Treatment Trends, Inc. training sessions
  • Board review
  • Toxicology learning sessions

Clinical Sites

Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN)

LVHN is the largest and most advanced provider of health care in the region with 14 hospital campuses in eastern Pennsylvania. LVHN functions as a major referral center for neighboring communities within a 50-mile radius. 

Treatment Trends, Inc.

Treatment Trends, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been helping those experiencing alcohol and substance misuse for more than 50 years, offering a continuum of care in a recovery-oriented system with inpatient and outpatient services, medications for opioid use disorder support, certified recovery specialist services and multiple pathways to recovery – from residential, to halfway home, to outpatient, to community recovery.
