Family Medicine Residency Program Tracks Offered

Our educational tracks are individualized educational plans that are focused on a specific area/element of family medicine to ensure graduates are exceedingly well prepared for their career goals.

Addiction Medicine

In primary care addiction medicine, track residents will extend their addiction medicine education, clinical experiences, educational curriculum development and scholarly work. This will lead them to develop applied clinical capacity as evidenced by carrying a minimum of five patients with a substance use disorder and a minimum of one patient receiving buprenorphine for opioid use disorders.

Residents in this track will have more experience within a traditional community-based addiction treatment facility (treatment trends) and they will have deeper experiences with toxicology: acute care substance use prevention and management and office-based substance use disorder treatment. Track residents will dive into the literature and create quick-hit asynchronous lectures focused on a hot topic related to primary care addiction medicine and assist with the motivational interviewing simulation training for fellow residents, making them standout leaders to their colleagues.

Geriatrics

The geriatrics track is recommended for residents interested in pursuing post-graduate training in a fellowship or desiring more experience and training in caring for older adults in the community, hospital, hospice or long-term/post-acute care settings. Residents will gain experience working with faculty in clinics, hospitals and outside facilities. The track is designed to engage the resident in many facets of geriatric medicine, including medical directorships of long-term care facilities, wound care and palliative end-of-life care, as well as the general care and assessment of geriatric patients.

Leadership (Advocacy, Research, Teaching)

Leadership in medicine encompasses a variety of activities including advocacy, research and teaching. While not all clinician leaders participate in all these activities, residents with a desire to be leaders in their career should understand these aspects of clinical leadership. This track offers residents a diverse experience for future leaders, allowing for both a generalist and specialist approach to the core facets of clinician leadership.

Lifestyle Medicine and Obesity Medicine Track

Lifestyle medicine and obesity medicine track is recommended for residents interested in pursuing additional training in bariatric/obesity medicine and/or lifestyle medicine. This track has two sections, and residents have the option to complete one or both sections of this track. Work in one segment track can overlap with work in the other segment.

For the lifestyle medicine segment of this track, residents will be working with our Lifestyle Medicine Residency curriculum (LMRC) with the intention of sitting for the American Board of lifestyle medicine exam after graduation. The intention of this portion of the track is for residents to get additional training in Lifestyle Medicine including intensive lifestyle management and group encounter training. The track augments the experience by giving opportunities to complete lifestyle medicine-focused work. It is suggested that residents also focus some of their selective time in the practical realm of lifestyle medicine by working with nutritionists, exercise physiologists, psychologists, sleep specialists and potentially various spiritual advisers to fully understand all six realms of lifestyle medicine.

Maternity Care

The goal of the maternity care track is to provide motivated residents with the knowledge, skills and experiences required to graduate residency and immediately provide evidence-based, relationship-centered maternity care in low-risk populations. The track encompasses preconception, antepartum, intrapartum and antenatal care in community, hospital and simulation-based environments. Through collaboration with family medicine and obstetric clinicians, midwives and lactation consultants, the track allows for individualized training tailored to the resident’s goals.

Sports Medicine

The sports medicine track is recommended for residents interested in pursuing post-graduate training in a fellowship or seeking more experience and training in managing common orthopedic and sports medicine injuries and conditions. Residents will gain experience working with faculty and other sports medicine team members (athletic trainers, physical therapists and coaches) in clinic and at various event locations.

Street Medicine

The street medicine track is recommended for residents interested in pursuing an experience in delivering medical care to marginalized populations who are unstably housed or experiencing homelessness, including those who are sheltered, unsheltered and in transient housing. Residents will rotate through unique clinical settings: soup kitchen and shelter clinics and street rounds and respite care, all of which provide primary care and urgent care to homeless patients.
