About the Department of Family Medicine
Imagine having way stations where even the most frightened and wounded of us could find care and tenderness and gather strength and hope. Creating and strengthening these way stations, these medical homes, for the people of the Lehigh Valley bioregion is the mission of the department of family medicine at Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN).
Focusing on collaboration, service excellence and clinical innovation, the department of family medicine activates this mission for patients in our communities through inspired service partnerships with local and regional family physicians and their practices, with family medicine residents and medical students and other appropriate learners, and with LVHN.
The unique qualities that we present to those we serve are relationship centered, with a generalist and whole-system perspective and employing a three-circle model emphasizing relationships, mindfulness and knowledge at the point of care. These qualities are elaborated through the disciplines of fidelity, thought and community, the practice of hospitality, and the celebration of abundance, mystery and grace.
We have been honored nationally for our relationship centered care, for our educational innovations in residency education and for pioneering many of the developments underlying the patient-centered medical home. Our network of primary care practices continues to grow and innovate.
Our Family Medicine Residency program is designed to complement the department vision. We have created an open, dynamic and safe educational environment where we are preparing future leaders for primary care. We value the healthy growth and development of our residents and their families with a goal for having these physicians become self-directed, reflective practitioners who achieve an integrated balance among their professional and personal lives.
Family medicine embodies and enacts the craft of healing at the primary care level, serving as an accessible, personalized home for integrated primary health care – a way station in place – the turtle’s back from which we and our patients resume flight into life together. Welcome to the excitement of primary care at LVHN.
