The Transitional Year Residency program follows a 13-block format, with each block generally lasting four weeks.
As a transitional year resident, you will spend up to six blocks learning fundamental clinical skills: three blocks in general medicine (inpatient), one block in the cardiac intensive care unit (CICU), one block in the medical intensive care unit (MICU) and four weeks in night float. You will also complete one block in emergency medicine, one block in ambulatory medicine (including internal medicine and family medicine) and up to seven-and-a-half blocks of elective time. The transitional year resident is expected to function as a categorical first-year resident in the department in which they are rotating, including taking call when required.
Transitional residents can take electives in any of the other residency programs and subspecialty services including, but not limited to, general surgery, inpatient and outpatient general medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, radiology, radiation oncology, anesthesiology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, family practice and all the subspecialties within internal medicine.
Additionally, residents gain experience in outpatient medical care during this year by participating in care at the Lehigh Valley Physicians Practice Clinic near Lehigh Valley Hospital–17th Street in Allentown during their ambulatory block.
The transitional year program is designed to fulfill the requirements of future residency training and can be tailored to meet the requirements of first-year residency training in internal medicine. The program maintains the same high quality as our other Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited residencies.
