The annual lecture series consists of subspecialty lectures organized by organ system on a monthly basis. These lectures are didactic or case-based, depending on the topic. They are delivered by core medicine subspecialty teaching attendings, and when applicable the subspecialty fellows. After completing the annual lecture series, Lehigh Valley Health Network transitional year residents will have developed a solid foundation in internal medicine. Scheduled topics include:
- Cardiology: pericardial disease, valvular syndromes, arrhythmias, chest pain evaluation and stress testing, EKG interpretation and perioperative cardiovascular evaluation
- Pulmonary: chest imaging, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension/pulmonary embolism, PFT analysis and ABG review
- Palliative medicine: palliative care in end-stage lung disease, hospice and holding a family meeting
- Nephrology: electrolyte abnormalities, principals of hemodialysis, uremia, screening for CKD, nephrolithiasis and glomerular disease
- Infectious disease: fever and neutropenia, infection control, bacterial and other infections and appropriate treatment, organism focus and medication review
- Endocrinology: diabetes management, thyroid dysfunction, calcium abnormalities and adrenals
- Hematology oncology: principles of chemotherapy, radiation oncology, bleeding disorders and cancers of the various body systems
- Rheumatology: vasculitic disease, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
- Neurology: epilepsy, stroke, dementia and neuromuscular disorders
- Gastroenterology: GI imaging and procedures, esophageal disorders, peptic ulcer disease and autoimmune liver disease
The subspecialists typically provide case reports demonstrating classic presentations of common disease states of their specialty.
