Direct observation develops introspection and fosters change based on individualized feedback. Within our residency program, direct observation is performed with the incorporation of OSCE (observed standardized clinical encounter).
Each intern participates in OSCEs at Lehigh Valley Health Network’s Center for Healthcare Education. These sessions focus on professionalism, developing a patient-centered approach and agenda setting. Standardized patients – actors trained to simulate patients – provide a real-life setting. Formative feedback, including one-on-one debriefing, is provided to each intern. The OSCE experience has become an integral part of our onboarding process for the residency program. Feedback from these sessions is considered high yield for professional development and transition from medical school to residency.
