What past residents say
“I chose Lehigh Valley Health Network for residency for multiple reasons; initially because I grew up very close in the Philadelphia suburbs and was very familiar with the prestige and success of the health network as a whole, and I wanted a perfect location where my wife and I could raise my son, which the Lehigh Valley provides well. I also was drawn to the ‘family-like’ interaction between the residents themselves and between the residents and the attendings. I could see that the residents were happy being in the program, were well-supported, and received excellent training. I wanted to be a part of that. When I matched and became a member of the residency, I learned quickly that my impression was correct.” – Matthew Romagano, DO, Class of 2017
“My first impression of LVHN that ‘sealed the deal’ was at the Interview Day breakfast. Craig was trying to play A/V guy, and Dr. Patruno was teasing him from the back row. But in true Craig fashion, he wasn't going to just passively take the teasing. So the first few minutes of the morning were comprised of this battle of the wits between Craig and Dr. Patruno while Craig was trying to get the PowerPoint presentation up on the screen. It was truly the most amusing interview breakfast I had on the interview trail. Right away I got the sense that this residency program was one where there was mutual respect and camaraderie amongst all the staff, where the hierarchy is not steep, and my experiences here have affirmed that impression. The benefit of that is that I feel empowered as a resident to speak up if I have a concern about patient care. Dr. Maran once told me, "If it's 2 a.m. and you think a patient needs to go back to the OR, just speak up and tell me to do the right thing. I may not like it, but I will still come in [from home] to go to the OR with you if you think that is what the patient needs." – Eunice Lee, MD, Class of 2016
“I chose Lehigh Valley because the program was well-organized and had the best balance of education and service among the programs with which I interviewed. The faculty and staff are open books of knowledge and supportive of resident education.” – Michelle Huang, MD, Class of 2015
“During interview season, many professors and upperclassmen said that when I interviewed at the place I was supposed to be, I would just know. I didn't understand this until I interviewed at LVHN. I knew I wanted to be in a program that would prepare me to pursue a fellowship if I decided I wanted to. The ob/gyn program at LVHN is one of the only programs around that had robotic and laparoscopic curriculums in place, which I felt would allow me to become a better minimally invasive surgeon. I wanted to be at a busy hospital and wanted to be part of a program where residents viewed one another as family. I found all of that and more at LVHN.” – Casey Brown, DO
"I was looking for a network that had a well-established minimally invasive surgery program in addition to having the financial stability that is hard to find nowadays in health care. The opportunity to perform extensive robotic surgery was a huge plus as well.” – Daniel Gomez, MD
